May 18 (UPI) -- A gunman was shot by police during a confrontation Friday at a South Florida resort owned by President Donald Trump, authorities said.

The shooting occurred early Friday at the Trump National Doral hotel and club, about 10 miles northwest of downtown Miami.

Officials said the gunman, draped in an American flag, began ranting about the president and fired multiple shots in the lobby of the hotel.

Police ultimately shot the man, identified as Jonathan Oddi, several times in the lower body.

One officer hurt his wrist, officials said.

"These officers did not hesitate for one second to engage this individual who was actively shooting in the lobby of the hotel," said Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez.

News footage showed the man was taken to a hospital in nearby Kendall, where he was said to be in stable condition.

Doral Mayor J.C. Bermudez said it's not believed the shooting is terror related.

Eric Trump, the president's son, thanked police officers in a tweet.

"A huge thank you to the incredible men and women of the @DoralPolice Department and @MiamiDadePD," he wrote. "Every day they keep our community safe. We are very grateful to you!"

The resort was bought by the Trump Organization in 2012 and has hosted the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship.
