Surgeon General Jerome Adams aids medical emergency on flight

May 17 (UPI) -- The United States surgeon general answered a call for help aboard a flight to Atlanta this week, he said.

Dr. Jerome Adams said he was on a Delta flight from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Wednesday when one of the passengers needed medical help.

"They asked if there was a doctor on board to help with a medical emergency," Adams said in a tweet. "Why yes -- yes there was."

It wasn't clear what the emergency involved, but Adams said the patient is now doing well.

"Thanks for your service and assistance," Delta told Adams in a tweet.

Thursday, Adams said he had the "good fortune" of being part of a team of individuals that responded on the flight, including two nurses.

"The truth is, there are doctors, nurses and techs who step up each and every day to respond to emergencies on flights, and they ALL should be recognized and thanked," Adams wrote. "My tweet wasn't about me -- it was a way of acknowledging and encouraging ALL of the individuals who step up when duty calls."

Adams was headed to Jackson, Miss.

"Nice job, Dr. Adams!" Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant tweeted.

Adams was sworn in as surgeon general in September.
