Harry Reid undergoes surgery for pancreatic tumor

May 14 (UPI) -- Former Sen. Harry Reid underwent surgery Monday to remove a tumor from his pancreas, his family revealed, saying his prognosis is good.

The former Democratic leader from Nevada had the procedure at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center in Baltimore.

"His doctors caught the problem early during a routine screening and his surgeons are confident that the surgery was a success and that the prognosis for his recovery is good," a statement from Reid's family said.

After recovering from surgery, the 78-year-old is expected to undergo chemotherapy.

"He is now out of surgery, in good spirits and resting with his family. He is grateful to his highly skilled team of doctors and to all who have sent and continue to send their love and support," his family added.

Former House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, offered his support to Reid on Twitter.

"You're a fighter, Harry. You can whip this. Prayers for @SenatorReid and his family and team," he wrote.

Reid has had a number of medical problems since 2015 when he fell while using exercise equipment in his home. He sustained multiple broken bones and underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his eye.

In April 2015, he told Univision he is sightless in his right eye after an 11-hour surgery.
