May 11 (UPI) -- Elon Musk has given the first glimpse of his underground Los Angeles tunnel, and said free rides will start in just a few months.
Musk's Boring Company has been digging the underground tunnels beneath the United States' second-largest city in a project to shift traffic through the heavily congested region.
"First Boring Company tunnel under LA almost done!" Musk wrote on Instagram late Thursday. "Pending final regulatory approvals, we will be offering free rides to the public in a few months.
"Once fully operational (demo system rides will be free), the system will always give priority to pods for pedestrians & cyclists for less than the cost of a bus ticket."
The tunnels are components of Musk's Loop transportation system, which he says will ultimately transport people in their own cars or passenger "pods"
Musk, who also heads Tesla and SpaceX, first shared his idea for the project in 2016 after becoming frustrated with snarled Los Angeles traffic.
"Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging," he tweeted then.
The tunnel, funded entirely by private money, would include electric platforms to carry vehicles up to 130 mph.
