Blizzard officially declared in Boston

March 13 (UPI) -- The National Weather Service said there were blizzard conditions near Boston as the nation's third nor'easter in two weeks pummeled the region Tuesday.

The agency said the criteria for a blizzard was met around noon near Marshfield Airport in Massachusetts. NWS forecasters said snow would fall in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York through Wednesday.

As of 6 p.m., snowfall totals topped more than 20 inches in Providence County, R.I., and Worcester County, Mass., for the previous 5 hours. Areas of Connecticut saw between 3 inches and 19 inches, New Jersey had up to 3 inches, and New York topped out at 11 inches in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said more than 175,000 customers were without power by about midday. Government offices were closed in the state Tuesday.

"Three nor'easters in less than 2 weeks isn't easy on anyone -- and we are extremely grateful for the hard work of our first responders, utility and road crews, and municipal officials who have been working nonstop to clean up after these powerful storms," Baker wrote on Twitter.

The NWS said snowfall would continue through Wednesday morning and warned about whiteout conditions in some areas.

Forecast models show the third nor'easter undergoing rapid intensification known as bombogenesis, or a bomb cyclone.

As of 7 p.m. EDT, there were more than 1,600 flight cancelations into or out of the United States and 2,800 delays, FlightAware reported. Most of the disruptions were in Chicago, New Jersey and New York,
