March 9 (UPI) -- Police responded Friday to a Yountville, Calif., military veterans home, where police said a gunman took at least three people hostage.
The gunman, kicked out of a program at the Veterans Home of California, Yountville, for veterans with emotional trauma, took hostages during a staff party Friday morning, officials said in a Press Democrat report.
The Napa County Sheriff's Office confirmed its presence at the facility at 10:47 a.m. Officials said the gunman, toting a high-powered rifle, exchanged gunfire with deputies, but no one was injured.
Witnesses reported hearing at least 20 shots, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
By 2:20 p.m. local time, hostage negotiators were still on-site.
The Yountville facility, the largest veterans home in the United States, houses roughly 1,100 aged or disabled veterans, according to its Facebook page.
