Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A 12-year-old girl is in custody after a middle school shooting in Los Angeles that resulted in several injuries.

At least three people were shot at the Sal Castro Middle School in LA's Westlake neighborhood, including a 15-year-old boy who was shot in the temple and a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the wrist. Both are in stable condition.

Three other people, including a 30-year-old woman and two children, ages 11 and 12, suffered minor injuries.

A 7th grader whose guardian asked that his last name not be used told the Los Angeles Times that a student brought a gun and some believed it was "fake."

"Someone decided to bring a gun, I guess someone was accidentally playing around with it," he said. "They thought it was a fake gun."

The school was on lockdown for several hours after the incident, but the LAPD declared the school safe later in the day.

The Los Angeles Police Department said it is trying to determine how the 12-year-old suspect allegedly brought a gun to campus.

A KTLA helicopter caught a glimpse of the girl, who was handcuffed as two police officers escorted her off school property.
