Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A teenage girl was injured Monday when she was shot at a high school in east central Texas -- possibly by another student, authorities said.

The shooting occurred before 8 a.m. at Italy High School in Italy, 40 miles south of Dallas.

The wounded girl was taken by medical helicopter and the suspect, described as a 16-year-old boy, was arrested. Neither teen was immediately identified.

The Italy Independent School district sent out a text message to parents from Superintendent Lee Joffee that said, "We had an active shooter incident at the high school campus this morning."

The message added that all students would be transferred to nearby Stafford Elementary School "for dismissal after police approval."

Both the high school, which houses grades six through 12, and the elementary school went on immediate lockdown after the shooting, officials said.
