Mary Norwood concedes Atlanta mayor's race

Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Two weeks after the election runoff for Atlanta mayor, Mary Norwood conceded the race to her opponent Keisha Lance Bottoms in a video Wednesday.

Norwood said she will no longer contest the election results, even while saying there are some "irregularities" in the vote that saw Democratic opponent Keisha Lance Bottoms win by 759 votes.

Norwood, also a Democrat, had asked for a recount due to the slim margin. Norwood's totals were at 49 percent with 45,840 votes.

During the video, posted online Wednesday night, Norwood said, "For the future of this city, I believe it is the right thing to do to move on and hold a new administration accountable."

Norwood lost the Dec. 5 mayor's race by less than 1 percent of the 92,169 votes cast, about the same margin that cost her the election in 2009 by Mayor Kasim Reed.

Bottoms' inauguration will be held Jan. 2.
