Dec. 13 (UPI) -- First lady Melania Trump visited a military base outside Washington, D.C., to craft cards with children and sort Toys for Tots gifts on Wednesday.

Trump joined children from military families at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling as she praised the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's annual Toys for Tots holiday drive.

"Today I'm here to support the amazing work that Toys for Tots has been doing to make the holidays brighter for children across the country," she said.

Trump addressed the group of military families, including about 40 of their children, as she helped them place gifts into bins marked or boys, girls and toddlers.

"It is my hope that during this holiday season, it is not about gifts, it is about family, service and gratitude," she said.

Trump reminded attendees of family's affected by the many powerful hurricanes that made their way through the United States earlier this year.

"After this year's devastating hurricane season, I hope everyone watching at home will consider giving back to programs like Toys for Tots," Trump said. "We must continue to look out for and help each other."

Trump also posed for pictures with the children and reflected on the past year.

"On a personal note, as my first year as first lady comes to an end, I have been privileged to witness the spirit and resilience of so many people in our country," she said.
