Twitter introduces 'threading' feature to link tweets

By Danielle Haynes

Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Twitter announced Tuesday it's introducing a feature allowing users to tie multiple tweets together in a single thread.

The feature is meant to make it easier for people to use multiple tweets to tell a story longer than what can be fit into a 280-character tweet. Users have created their own workaround to do this by successively replying to their own tweets to add additional posts.

"This method of tweeting, while effective and popular, can be tricky for some to create and it's often tough to read or discover all the tweets in a thread," a post on Twitter's blog said. "That's why we're thrilled to share that we're making it simpler to thread tweets together, and to find threads, so it's easier to express yourself on Twitter and stay informed."

In order to add additional tweets to an original post, users press a "plus button" in the composer window. All threaded tweets will post at the same time. Twitter also added a "show this thread" label to threaded tweets so users can see all connected posts in the same place.

The new feature comes weeks after Twitter expanded the number of characters it allows in a single tweet -- from 140 to 280.

"We know people also may want to serialize a longer story or thought, or provide ongoing commentary on an event or topic," Twitter said.

The company said it is rolling out the feature to mobile apps and the website "in the coming weeks."
