Conyers retiring amid sexual misconduct allegations

Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Michigan Rep. John Conyers announced Tuesday he is retiring immediately amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Conyers told a Detroit radio station he's "retiring today" and endorsed his son, John Conyers III, to take his seat in the House.

"This too shall pass. And I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children," Conyers said.

The Michigan Democrat has faced calls to resign from various lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Ian Conyers, the grandson of the congressman's brother, told the New York Times he planned to run for his great-uncle's seat next year.

"His doctor advised him that the rigor of another campaign would be too much for him just in terms of his health," Ian Conyers said.

Ian Conyers said although he supports his great-uncle, the longtime lawmaker should deal with the sexual misconduct allegations.

The House ethics committee opened an investigation last month into the accusations from a former staffer.

John Conyers was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and has served in the House since 1965.
