Supreme Court allows Trump travel ban to take full effect

Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled to allow President Donald Trump's travel ban to take full effect amid ongoing legal challenges.

The court's divided decision on Monday allows the third version of Trump's ban on travel from six mostly Muslim majority countries, including Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, as well as people from North Korea and some Venezuelan officials, to take effect without restrictions.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and a federal district court in Maryland ruled the ban could only block entry from nationals of other countries who lack a bona fide with a person or entity already in the United States.

The Supreme Court's decision places the rulings from the lower courts on hold.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Justice Sonia Sotomayor would have left the lower court orders in place.
