Tyson to build $300M facility in Tennessee, create 1,500 jobs

By Danielle Haynes

Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Tyson Foods announced Monday it plans to build a $300 million facility and create more than 1,500 local jobs in western Tennessee.

The company said the chicken production complex will begin operations in late 2019 in the city of Humboldt.

This will be Tyson's fifth location in the state and its second development in the state this year. In August, the chicken company announced the $84 million expansion of its facility in Union City and the creation of 300 jobs.

"There is not a doubt in my mind that Tyson Foods' tremendous job creation and capital investment will have a long lasting, positive impact in Gibson County that will ring in a new era of economic growth bringing opportunity for all of our citizens," Gibson County Mayor Tom Witherspoon said.

Tyson was considering other undisclosed locations across the country for its new development. The company may still build facilities in those locations.

The new facility in Humboldt will produce pre-packaged trays of fresh chicken for retail grocery stores across the country. Tyson said it pays more than $61 million to Tennessee farmers and made a $313 million statewide impact for fiscal year 2016.
