Nov. 5 (UPI) -- At least 26 people were killed in Texas after a man opened fire in a church outside of San Antonio on Sunday morning, Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed.
A witness reported a man walked into First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 35 miles southeast of San Antonio, and began shooting at about 11 a.m. in what Abbott said was the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history.
The gunman, who was identified as a young white male, possibly in his late 20s, was spotted at a gas station dressed in all black before entering the church.
He was killed after a brief chase from Wilson County into Guadalupe County, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Freeman Martin said.
Abbott said the Texas Department of Public Safety would provide more information when available and offered condolences to the victims.
"Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act," he said. "Our thanks to law enforcement for their response."
The FBI was responding to the scene, a spokeswoman for the agency's San Antonio field office said.
President Donald Trump tweeted that he is monitoring the situation from his trip to Japan.
"May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene," he tweeted.
