New York truck crash that killed 8 treated as terrorism

Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Eight people were killed and at least 11 others were injured Tuesday afternoon in New York City when a man drove a rented truck onto a bike path, an act police are treating as terrorism.

New York City police said a 29-year-old man drove a rented Home Depot pickup truck onto a bike path along West Side Highway, striking several people.

Saying that police are treating the incident as an act of terrorism, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio confirmed eight people died. Police added that about a dozen others were injured.

ABC News identified a suspect as Sayfullo Saipov of Tampa, Fla. NBC New York reported that Saipov came to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2010.

The truck also crashed into a school bus, the New York Times reported. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said there was "no evidence to suggest a wider plot."

Police shot the suspect and arrested him after he crashed his vehicle and exited with a paintball gun and a pellet gun.

President Donald Trump acknowledged the attack Tuesday evening on Twitter.

"My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack," Trump wrote. "God and your country are with you!"
