At least 2 dead in accident at Nevada gold mine

Oct. 31 (UPI) -- At least two people died in an accident at a Nevada gold mine Tuesday, officials said.

The incident occurred at the Marigold Mine in Valmy, Nev., when a haul truck collided with another vehicle in the mine's open pit area, according to mine's operator.

"We immediately activated our emergency plan, mobilized our emergency response team and notified the relevant authorities. We regret to confirm two employees have been fatally injured," SSR Mining said in a statement.

The Elko Daily Free Press reported multiple injuries at the mine.

Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Allen told News 4 that his office is conducting a joint investigation with the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration

SSR Mining CEO Paul Benson offered his condolences to the victims' families.

"This incident is particularly upsetting as the health and safety of our employees is our highest priority," he said. "We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident and are offering support to our colleagues' families and our employees at the mine site."
