Reports: Trump lawyer Cohen to meet with Congress Russia investigators

Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's personal attorney, is expected to meet with the House intelligence committee on Tuesday as part of Congress' Russia investigation, sources familiar with the situation said.

The scheduled meeting was reported by CNN and ABC News. CNN reported that Cohen will also meet with Senate investigators Wednesday.

Cohen is of interest to congressional investigators because of his role in negotiations in 2015 and 2016, during the presidential campaign, to build a proposed Trump Tower in Moscow. While that plan was ultimately abandoned, investigators want to know if Cohen knew of any Russian plans to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Tuesday's closed-door interview comes weeks after a meeting with the Senate committee set for last month was postponed.

Before last month's scheduled meet, Cohen denied knowledge of any Russian attempt to involve itself in the election -- leading the panel to scrap the interview, saying Cohen's statement pre-empted its purpose.

"What we do is behind closed doors," Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., the committee's chairman, said at the time. "We don't expect individuals who come behind closed doors to publicly go out and tell [their story publicly]."

The panel later invited Cohen to an open hearing on Oct. 25, which was also postponed.

During the summer, it was revealed that Cohen spoke with high-ranking Kremlin officials about the Moscow real estate project while Trump's presidential campaign was underway. His name was also mentioned in a dossier prepared by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, which accuses Cohen of traveling to Prague to meet with Russians -- a claim Cohen has denied.

House investigators also reportedly plan to question Trump campaign digital director Brad Pascale on Tuesday.
