James Comey confirms Twitter account that was anonymous

By Allen Cone

Oct. 23 (UPI) -- James Comey has been using an anonymous Twitter account, according to a journalist and friend of the former FBI director.

The Twitter account now goes by the name of @FormerBu after previously being called Reinhold Niebuhr. The feed earlier Monday included a picture that appears to show Comey standing on a highway in Iowa. The post said: Goodbye Iowa. On the road home. Gotta get back to writing. Will try to tweet in useful ways."

Benjamin Wittes later posted on his Twitter account: "Ok, in light of this latest tweet, I will confirm that @FormerBu is, in fact, James Comey himself."

Reinhold Niebuhr was a well-known theologian about whom Comey wrote an undergraduate thesis at the College of William & Mary.

The account included scenic pictures from different places, West Point, N.Y., and Gettysburg, Pa., with the line, "Good place to think about leadership and values."

Some posters on Twitter were speculating he was running for U.S. president because photos were taken in Iowa. Washington Post national reporter Robert Costa posted, "Former FBI director Jim Comey tweets this pensive photo from Iowa, wearing running shoes in the home of the caucuses."

Comey is married to Patrice Failor, who is an Iowa native. Her brother is Ed Failor Jr., a top staffer for the Republican caucus in the Iowa Senate.

On Ed Failor's Facebook page, he noted his father, Ed Failor Sr., celebrated his 90th birthday over the weekend in Iowa at an acclaimed steakhouse in downtown Des Moines, 801 Chophouse.

Comey was fired by President Donald Trump in May.

Comey wrote memos of his conversations with Trump about the FBI's investigation into Russian election meddling.

Earlier this month, the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee said they would not pursue details of the memos.
