Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A St. Louis gas station clerk was charged with murder this week for allegedly shooting a customer dead -- believing he intended to shoplift a $1.10 bag of candy, authorities said.

The cashier, Taleb Rebhi Ali Jawher, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action for the September killing of 34-year-old Christopher Simmons, reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Charging documents say Simmons "did not steal or leave the store with candy."

According to investigators, the men started arguing inside the store and the confrontation spilled out into the parking lot -- where Simmons was shot.

Jawher, 39, was arrested nearly a month after the shooting, and Simmons' mother told KMOV-TV she was "relieved" he is now facing charges.

A St. Louis judge set Jawher's bail at $1 million.
