Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A person is in custody after jumping a concrete barrier outside the White House on Tuesday morning, U.S. Secret Service said.

Secret Service posted on Twitter at 9:49 a.m. that District of Columbia police officers were "responding to an individual who jumped over the concrete barrier" on the south side of the White House.

Ten minutes later, the agency said the person was in custody and the police were "en route to investigate a suspicious package. South fence will remain closed until further notice."

An hour later, the agency posted that the suspicious package was been cleared and the "south fence line pedestrian traffic has returned to normal."

Secret Service said the backpack, which was dropped off, contained no hazardous items, The Washington Post reported.

D.C. police said the incident occurred along E Street, near the Ellipse, and the offender jumped into a restricted area.

President Donald Trump was in the White House at the time. He met with Secretary of Defense James Mattis at 10:45 a.m., according to his schedule.

In March, a person jumped over a pedestrian barrier on the north side of the White House. Later that day, a man was arrested after driving his car up to a Secret Service checkpoint at 15th and E Street Northwest.

Ten days later, the White House was put on lockdown for 45 minutes after a man told authorities at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue that he had a bomb near the grounds.
