Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. Coast Guard resumed its search for one missing worker after an oil rig exploded in Louisiana Sunday night leaving three in critical condition.

Sheriff Joe Lopinto of Jefferson Parish said that the search of Lake Pontchartrain would continue for "as long as it takes."

Three of seven workers injured in the explosion remain in critical condition, officials said -- two with severe burns.

The rig, owned by Clovelly Oil Co. of New Orleans, is located north of Kenner, La. The explosion rattled homes more than a mile away with a sonic boom.

A resident who lives two blocks from the blast told The Washington Post Monday that the blast "shook me out of my couch."

Rescue workers climbed onto the rig to turn off the gas line, despite the intense heat.

Despite the fire being under control early Monday, officials said there could be oil spilling.

The exact cause is under investigation. Officials suspect cleaning chemicals may have ignited during maintenance work.
