Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Two police officers were shot while responding to a shooting in New Haven, Conn., on Saturday morning, prompting a four-hour armed standoff with the suspect, law enforcement officials said.

The officers' injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Officers Eric Pasino and Scott Shumway were responding to a report that a woman had been shot several times inside a home around 10:30 a.m. While attempting to clear the residence, the suspect, John Douglas Monroe 50, opened fire on the officers. Both men were shot in the arm, according to the New Haven Register.

Officials told the paper they believe the incident began as a domestic dispute.

The female victim, 51, escaped the house and ran to a neighbor's house. Police said she is in critical condition and undergoing surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital.

The suspect remained holed up inside, with members of the New Haven SWAT team, Connecticut State Police, the FBI and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives at the scene. After attempts to convince Monroe to leave the house failed, officers entered and located him in the basement. Police said Monroe pointed a long gun at them from the bottom of the stairs and officers fired, striking him an undetermined number of times.
