Sept. 22 (UPI) -- First lady Melania Trump carried on her predecessor's legacy Friday by harvesting crops from the White House garden with a group of schoolchildren.

Trump hosted children from the Boys and Girls Club of America on the South Lawn to promote healthy eating, a cause championed by Michelle Obama -- who actually planted the White House garden, and frequently invited young people to help plant and harvest.

The first lady told the children Friday she's "a big believer in healthy eating because it reflects on your mind and your body."

"I encourage you to continue to eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, so you grow up healthy and take care of yourself."

Together, Trump and the attendees picked lettuce, kale, peas, radishes and Swiss chard. The National Park Service, which maintains the White House grounds, presented a tutorial on how to harvest and plant, and the children also planted some vegetables.

"Healthy, nurturing, and positive environments are instrumental in enhancing the well-being and mindfulness of all children," Trump said. "They learn so much through their surroundings and the White House kitchen garden is a prime example of how children can enjoy the outdoors and learn about healthy eating and living, while also gaining an understanding of the White House and it's rich history."
