Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A derailed train in New York City's Penn Station delayed morning travel on Wednesday, another incident in regional commuters' "summer of hell."
An unoccupied NJ Transit train pulled into the city's major train hub Wednesday and derailed on Penn Station's Track 4 at around 4:20 a.m. No injuries were reported, as only the train's conductor and engineer were aboard. The train was lifted back onto the tracks by 7 a.m.
It was enough to caused 20-minute delays into and from New York City, NJ Transit announced in a statement. The delay backed up trains leaving from New Jersey all morning.
The derailment was the latest setback for city commuters in what has been called the "summer of hell." While Penn Station is undergoing renovation to replace aging tracks, switches and signals, three other derailments have been reported in 2017 at the United States' busiest rail hub.
A slow-speed derailment on July 6 caused no injuries, but briefly stranded 180 passengers. On April 3, a NJ Transit train derailed and damaged tracks. Repair took one week following that incident.
On March 24, a high-speed Amtrak Acela train derailed and sideswiped an arriving NJ Transit train, causing no injuries but making significant delays.
