Low-cost airline WOW air to fly from four U.S. Midwest cities to Europe

Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Iceland's low-cost airline WOW air announced $99.99 transatlantic flights originating in St. Louis, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Detroit.

The expansion announced Wednesday, from eight U.S. destinations to 12, will begin in spring 2018, with flights from the four Midwest cities to Iceland at the one-way price of $99.99. Connecting flights from Reykjavik, Iceland, to 19 other European cities it serves will start at $149.99, the airline said.

It will be St. Louis' only direct connection to European destinations.

Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport spokesperson Mindy Kershner said flights from Cincinnati to Reykjavik will begin on May 10. Flights from Detroit will launch on April 26, Cleveland flights begin May 4 and WOW Air begins service from St. Louis on May 17.

The airline already flies from Iceland to Toronto and Montreal.

The airline flies single-aisle Airbus 321 planes, painted purple, with an average age of 2.9 years, making its fleet among the newest and most fuel-efficient in the world, the airline's website says.

"We like the region," WOW air CEO Skuli Mogensen told USA Today. "We think there's opportunity there. We think it's underserved."
