An eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, blocking the light of the sun from reaching us, Google explained.

This will be the first total solar eclipse within the contiguous United States since Feb. 26, 1979. The 1979 eclipse passed over the northwestern United States in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and Canadian provinces.
