3 shot dead at Milwaukee-area drag strip; gunman at large

By Ed Adamczyk

Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Wisconsin police are searching for a gunman who killed three people at point-blank range Sunday night at an auto drag strip near Milwaukee, Kenosha County sheriffs said.

The victims were standing near a food vendor at the car show and drag race event at Great Lakes Dragaway, near Union Grove, Ill., when they were approached by a man with a gun. The attacker started shooting at "point-blank" range, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said.

The suspect, described by authorities as a black man wearing jean shorts and a hooded sweatshirt, got away.

Organizers of the annual event, called Larry's Fun Fest, said about 5,000 people attended Sunday's show. The race course was evacuated after the shooting.

Larry's Fun Fest featured "smaller, souped-up 'Fast and Furious' type vehicles."

Authorities said two of the wounded died at the scene, and the third died en route to the hospital.

It wasn't immediately clear if the suspect knew the victims, and investigators are working on a motive.

"This [shooting] is not indicative of this crowd. This is isolated and this is somebody who had a grudge with somebody and they came here and they really ruined a family event for people," resident Brian Mitchell said.
