'Facebook Watch' launches to compete with YouTube, TV networks

Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Facebook has launched a new video platform to compete with YouTube and television networks.

Facebook Watch will allow users to view and publish, as well as consume original content created by the social media giant. The company hopes users will engage with others around the particular content they enjoy.

"We believe it's possible to rethink a lot of experiences through the lens of building community -- including watching video," said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "Watching a show doesn't have to be passive. It can be a chance to share an experience and bring people together who care about the same things.

"You'll be able to chat and connect with people during an episode, and join groups with people who like the same shows afterwards to build community."

Facebook Watch will be accessible through a tab placed on the page when users log in. The initial launch, however, will limit the availability to only select users for now.

Facebook Watch programming will debut Aug. 28.

One of the new platform's programs is entitled, Bae or Bail, in which "Unsuspecting couples put their relationship and wits to the test as they're thrown into terrifying scenarios," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

There will also be several sports-oriented shows, including Championship Rewind, which is described as a behind-the-scenes story of the Golden State Warriors' 2016-17 championship NBA season.
