Dow closes at all-time high, shy of 22,000-point milestone

Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The Dow Jones Industrial Average flirted with crossing the 22,000-point mark Tuesday, closing at an all-time high of 21,963.

The Dow opened on the first day of August trading at 21,961 points. It reached a high of 21,990 points but dropped back down to close 37 points shy of the milestone.

The Standard & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices also saw slight gains on Tuesday. The S&P 500 closed at 2,476 points after opening at 2,477 points and the Nasdaq closed at 6,362 points after opening at 6,372 points.

The Dow crossed the 19,000, 20,000 and 21,000 thresholds since President Donald Trump's inauguration.
