Alabama escapees used peanut butter in jailbreak

Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A 12-man jailbreak in Alabama over the weekend was aided by peanut butter used to obscure a cell's identification, authorities said.

Sheriff James Underwood of the Walker County Sheriff's Office said the escapees tricked a newly-hired guard into opening a door leading outward.

"They changed the number over the door with peanut butter. They hollered, 'Hey, open door' so-and-so, but (the number the inmates gave) was the outside door, and unknowingly to him, he hit that lock and out the door they went," Underwood said.

The sheriff added that the inmates tossed blankets over razor wire to facilitate their escape from the jail, about 35 miles from Birmingham.

"He should have been more cautious about it," Underwood said of the new guard.

Eleven of the 12 escapees, including two accused of attempted murder, were caught within hours of the jailbreak. One, Brady Andrew Kilpatrick, is still at large. Kilpatrick, 24, was jailed on drug and drug paraphernalia possession charges.
