New York City subway train derails, no injuries

By Ed Adamczyk

July 21 (UPI) -- A New York City subway train came off the rails Friday -- its second derailment incident in a month, the city's transit agency said.

No one was injured when the second set of wheels on the second car of the southbound Q train came off the rails, shortly before 9 a.m. However, the derailment near Brooklyn's Brighton Beach caused delays and train schedule adjustments.

Though a subway train, it derailed above ground. A rescue train arrived to take the 135 people aboard the stricken train to their destination, Metropolitan Transit Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz said.

A derailment in Harlem in late June injured 39 people, and commuters were stranded in dark, smoke-filled cars for up to two hours.

On Thursday, New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo called on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to increase funding allocation to the city's subway service.

This summer, New York City commuters have contended with multiple derailments, Amtrak's renovation of Penn Station and numerous signal breakdowns and delays, WNBC-TV, New York, reported.
