Police truck hits couple on beach near New York City

By Ed Adamczyk

July 17 (UPI) -- Two people were injured when they were struck by a police patrol vehicle at a Long Island beach in New York, authorities said.

The beachgoers, a man and a woman, were lying on the sand Sunday evening at Long Beach, about 20 miles east of New York City, when they were run over by a police patrol vehicle there. One injured person sustained broken ribs.

Police called the incident an accident because the driver of the patrol truck did not see the pair. Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling too fast, WABC-TV, New York, reported Monday.

A police vehicle typically travels the beach after lifeguards go off-duty at 6 p.m. Witnesses said police were trying to get people out of the water at the time of the accident.

The injured couple were taken to South Nassau Communities Hospitals in Oceanside, but were listed in stable condition. The driver of the vehicle was also hospitalized.
