July 14 (UPI) -- A sinkhole in southwest Florida swallowed up one house and the majority of a second, and forced neighborhood evacuations, Pasco County emergency officials said Friday.

Pasco County Fire Rescue described one home in Land O' Lakes as a "complete loss" and a second as 60 percent lost.

"The sinkhole is still active," it said on Facebook.

The Tampa Bay Times reported the opening swelled up a boat and prompted the evacuation of eight nearby homes.

WFLA-TV said the sinkhole started out about the size of a small swimming pool, but increased in size.
