Honda recalls more than 1M vehicles over engine fires

July 14 (UPI) -- Honda recalled 1.15 million vehicles in the United States for faulty battery sensors that have caused engine fires in some of its cars.

The voluntary recall announced Thursday affects the 12-volt battery sensor in 2013-16 model year Accords, the Japanese automaker said.

"Honda has received four reports of engine compartment fires in the United States related to this issue, all within the 'salt belt' area," Honda said in a statement. "There have been no reported injuries related to these incidents."

The battery sensor, located on the negative battery cable in the engine, alerts drivers to problems with the battery or charging system. Officials said the sensors may not be properly sealed, and moisture or road salt may get inside leading to corrosion.

"A shorted sensor can heat up through electrical resistance, potentially resulting in smoke coming from under the hood or, in the worst case, a fire," Honda said.

The automaker said there have been four reports of engine fires.

Honda said it would start contacting owners of the affected vehicles later this month. Owners will be able to have battery sensors checked and replaced for free at Honda dealerships.
