Scalise released from ICU after contracting infection

July 12 (UPI) -- Rep. Steve Scalise was moved out of intensive care Wednesday after surgery to fight an infection he contracted after being shot during a practice for the annual congressional baseball game.

Scalise, R-La., the House majority whip, was moved back to the ICU on July 5 after contracting an infection. He was wounded in the hip and required surgery to repair damaged bones, organs and blood vessels.

Prior to contracting the infection, Scalise had been listed in "fair" condition while recovering at MedStar Washington Hospital.

Though he is no longer in intensive care, Scalise is still listed in "serious" condition and doctors said the infection will need to be fully cured before they can consider moving him to an in-patient rehabilitation center to begin the next phase of his recovery.

Scalise was shot June 14, when gunman James Hodgkinson, 66, who had expressed grievances with the Republicans, opened fire on the Republican squad practicing for the annual congressional baseball game. Five others were also injured in the incident and Hodgkinson was killed in a shootout with police.
