July 11 (UPI) -- Amazon is planning to add 900 jobs at a new office in Boston as the online retailer boosts its tech operations outside its Seattle headquarters.

Amazon now employs more than 1,000 workers in the Boston area, which is a major academic and technology hub. In the state, there are 3,000 full-time Amazon jobs.

The new office, which will include 150,000 square feet of space in the Fort Point neighborhood of Boston, will be ready next year, the Boston Herald reported. It's an area noted for companies involved in innovation.

"There's no question Massachusetts is the nation's leader in innovation," House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo said after Monday's announcement by Amazon.

The Amazon office will handle Amazon Web Services, Audible and Amazon's voice-activated technology, Alexa.

"We're hiring a lot of people in the next 12 months," said Touloumtzis, who doubles as principal software engineer. "We just needed more space."

Touloumtzi was the first Amazon employee to work in the Boston area -- in 2012.

Amazon is expanding in other areas in the United States.

On Monday, the company conducted a grand opening of a corporate office in Chicago. More than 200 people will work on Amazon Web Services, operations and advertising and that number is expected to double in the next few months, Samantha Singer, general manager of Amazon's Chicago corporate office, said.

In January, Amazon opened a similar office in Pittsburgh.

And last year, it opened an office in Minneapolis, the home of rival retailers Target and Best Buy.

Amazon had 341,400 full-time and part-time workers in 2016, according to its annual report. It was listed as the 12th largest employer by Fortune way behind No. 1 Walmart with 2.3 million.

The company was founded in 1994.
