July 5 (UPI) -- A New York City police officer died after she was shot in the face by an attacker who was then located and shot to death, police said Wednesday.

Miosotis Familia, 48, a 12-year NYPD veteran, was shot as she sat with her partner in a patrol car in the Bronx early Wednesday. NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill said the suspect fired through the window of the patrol car and then fled.

Familia was taken to a hospital, where she died. The suspect, later identified as Alexander Bonds of the Bronx, was found about one block away from where the shooting took place by a two-person anti-crime team of police officers.

When he was confronted, Bonds allegedly drew a revolver, and was shot and killed by the officers, O'Neill said. He added the shooting of Familia was an "unprovoked attack."

Another person, believed to be a bystander, was struck in the abdomen by a bullet at the location where Familia was shot, and was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

Bonds was on parole after a 2013 robbery in Syracuse, police said.
