June 30 (UPI) -- A crop-dusting plane crashed amid a dense fog in southeast North Dakota, killing the pilot, sheriff's officials said.

John Goerger, 45, died Thursday morning when his 2010 Air Tractor 602 aircraft crashed into a bean field about 9 miles west of Gwinner.

The Sargent County Sheriff's Department said fog may have been to blame for the crash. The flight originated from Lisbon airport.

A nearby farmer and his wife observed the plane nosedive to the field about 500 yards from their home. They called 911, and the farmer rushed to the scene to find the pilot dead.

The Federal Aviation Administration was investigating the cause of the crash.
