June 21 (UPI) -- Chris Lattner, the chief of Tesla's autopilot software division who previously worked at Apple, announced he has quit after six months.

Lattner joined Tesla in January to serve as the company's vice president of Autopilot Software after spending 11 years in Apple, where he led the development of Swift, the programming language to make apps on Apple's operating systems.

Tesla competes with other companies such as Uber and Apple in efforts to develop self-driving software for vehicles.

"Turns out that Tesla isn't a good fit for me after all. I'm interested to hear about interesting roles for a seasoned engineering leader!" Lattner wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. "My resume is easy to find online."

Apple CEO Time Cook on June 13 revealed the company is working on developing technology for a self-driving car, which he described as the "the mother of all AI projects."

Several other tech companies have been working on self-driving car technology, including Alphabet's Waymo and processor company Intel. Cars manufacturers, including General Motors and BMW, have been developing the vehicles. Ride-sharing company Uber has also jumped into development.
