Kushner to travel to Middle East to pursue peace deal

June 19 (UPI) -- Senior presidential adviser Jared Kushner will travel to the Middle East to pursue an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, a White House official said.

The unidentified official said Sunday that Kushner is expected to arrive in Jerusalem on Wednesday and will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. Kushner, the son-in-law of President Donald Trump, will be accompanied by Jason Greenblatt, a Trump assistant and special representative for international negotiations.

The official said the talks will "continue conversations" begun by Trump during his May visit to the Middle East, and will concentrate on "priorities and next steps" in the peace process.

Soon after Trump's visit to the Middle East, Kushner's role as White House adviser was questioned after it was revealed that his meetings with Russian officials were included in the FBI probe of possible Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election. Kushner has extensive foreign policy responsibilities in the Trump administration; his portfolio includes the Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, relations between the United States and China, and other domestic and foreign policy spheres.
