Trump attorney: President not 'under investigation for obstruction'

June 18 (UPI) -- Jay Sekulow, an attorney for Donald Trump, on Sunday said the president is not being investigated for obstruction of justice.

"Let me be clear here," said Sekulow, a member of the president's legal team, on NBC's Meet The Press. "The president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction."

On Friday morning, Trump posted on Twitter: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt."

Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, said the president was only referring to a news report.

"The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to the Washington Post," he said.

The Post on Wednesday reported Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election now includes looking into whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

Also appearing on CNN's State of the Union, Sekulow said Trump's message on Twitter was an abbreviated response to the report, but added that Trump is "very effective" with his use of social media.

"There's a limitation on Twitter, as we all know," Sekulow said. "The President's response was as it related to the Washington Post report. He cannot in a Twitter statement include all of that in there. ... That's it. Simple explanation."

On May 9, Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, who was investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign and the Russian officials. Mueller was later appointed as special counselor. Sekulow said Trump "thought it was in the best interest of the American people" to fire Comey.

In an NBC interview on May 11, Trump said "When I decided to [fire Comey], I said to myself, I said you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story."

"He's not afraid of the investigation -- there is no investigation," Sekulow said on NBC. "There is not an investigation of the president of the United States, period."

Mueller, the FBI director before Comey, has not released any details on the investigation.
