Blimp catches fire, crashes near U.S. Open in Wisconsin

By Doug G. Ware

June 15 (UPI) -- Authorities are investigating the cause of a blimp crash Thursday near the U.S. Open golf tournament in Wisconsin.

The airship was flying over the course in Hartford, Wis., when it caught fire and went down about a half-mile from the Erin Hills Golf Course, where the tournament opened Thursday.

The only person on board was the pilot, who received some burns but parachuted out and survived.

Advertising company AirSign was operating the blimp, but the airship was not affiliated with the golf event or broadcaster Fox Sports, the U.S. Golf Association, the tournament operator, said.

Several people captured footage of the blimp as it went down and posted the videos online.

No one on the ground was hurt, officials said, and the crash did not affect tournament play. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
