June 14 (UPI) -- A man opened fire at a UPS mailing center in downtown San Francisco on Wednesday and killed three people before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

The gunman, who has since been identified as UPS driver Jimmy Lam, targeted the UPS San Francisco Customer Center in the city's Potrero Hill district in southeast San Francisco, on San Bruno Avenue between 16th and 17th streets, just off the Bayshore Freeway.

A witness told the San Francisco Chronicle that the shooting started around 9 a.m. and that at least three people were shot.

Authorities said late Wednesday that three victims had died in addition to the gunman, who police say shot himself. The suspect was named by multiple news reports Wednesday afternoon, but SFPD has not yet confirmed his identity.

It's unclear exactly how many people were injured, but officials said some workers were taken to San Francisco General Hospital nearby.

A UPS spokesman released a statement offering condolences for the victims.

"The company is saddened and deeply concerned about affected employees, family members and the community we share," spokesman Steve Gaut said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those touched by this incident."

The four-story facility employs about 850 people and is a package sorting hub and delivery center, UPS said.

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are aiding the SFPD in the investigation.
