June 8 (UPI) -- Nissan North America Inc. announced Thursday it will equip its most popular car models with autonomous emergency braking, starting in 2018.

The feature known as AEB, in which a vehicle senses an obstruction ahead of it and can automatically apply its brakes without driver input, will be standard equipment on more than one million Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, Murano and Leaf models. The system uses radar to determine what is ahead of a vehicle, and alerts the driver if a collision is possible; the vehicle will slow automatically if the driver does not respond.

CNET has reported 20 automakers selling vehicles in the United States, including Nissan, agreed to make AEB standard equipment on their products by 2022.
