May 31 (UPI) -- Cashews and Macadamia nuts are being pulled from supermarket shelves due to possible Listeria contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

A recall of Simple Truth Dry Roasted Macadamia Nuts, sold in clear, 12-ounce plastic packages, was announced by Kroger Co. The packages were also sold in Bakers, Gerbes and Dillons stores throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Indiana.

The packages have a printed expiration date of May, 2, 2018, and a UPC code of 11110-02478. Customers who purchased the product were advised to discard them, or return them for a refund.

Ava's Organic Roasted Salted Cashews, sold in 8-ounce plastic tubs in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, were also recalled after a supplier discovered contamination in a piece of processing equipment. Although no Listeria was found, the recall proceeded out of an abundance of caution, an FDA statement said. It added that fewer than 225 packages were offered for sale.

The cashews have a UPC code of 8-10111-01035-1, are identified on the package as from Lot No. 11817-L2 and have an expiration date of April 28, 2018. Customers were advised by the FDA not to consume the products, but to return them for a refund.

No illnesses have been reported in either recall.

About 1,600 Listeriosis infections occur each year in the United States, leading to about 200 fatalities annually. Symptoms of muscle aches, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems can be severe in the elderly, in pregnant women or in those with reduced immune systems.
