May 25 (UPI) -- Wisconsin officials said one teenager died and another was seriously injured after a small plane crashed near the city of Chetek.

Chetek Fire Chief Ryan Olson said the plane crashed into the Red Cedar River near Chetek. Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said the single engine, two-seater plane crashed at about 6:30 p.m on Wednesday.

He said the teen who died was a Chetek-Weyerhaeuser High School senior, while the teen who is in "very serious" condition was a Cameron High School senior.

Both victims were pulled from the wreckage, Fitzgerald said. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration launched an investigation into the crash.

Fitzgerald said the identities of the victims were not yet released out of respect to their families.
