1.2M Ram trucks recalled for possible airbag, seat belt failures

May 12 (UPI) -- Fiat Chrysler announced Friday it is recalling about 1.2 million Ram pickup trucks for a possible software problem causing airbags and seat belts to fail.

The recall affects certain versions of the Ram 1500 and 2500 models manufactured between 2013 and 2016, and Ram 3500 models made from 2014 to 2016. It involves about 1 million trucks sold in the United States, 216,007 in Canada, 21,668 in Mexico and 21,530 elsewhere, the automaker said.

The problem involves an error in the vehicle's software that could incorrectly determine the failure of a sensor. The side airbags and seat belt tensioners could fail in the event of a rollover after a "significant underbody impact." The company said it is aware of one fatality and two injuries linked to the safety system failures.

A dashboard warning light would indicate a problem, a statement by Fiat Chrysler said. To reset the system in the event the light is on, drivers should turn the vehicle off, and then on; if the light goes off, the vehicle is working properly.

The recall announcement Friday involves the largest number of Fiat Chrysler vehicles since May 2016, when 4.3 million vehicles, made between 2004-12, were recalled to replace their front passenger air bags.
