Watch live: Deputy press secretary gives daily press briefing

By UPI Staff

May 10 (UPI) -- White House principal deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders is likely to face a number of questions Wednesday about President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey during the daily press briefing.

Sanders is scheduled to answer questions at the White House at 1:30 p.m.

The briefing comes less than a day after Trump said he fired Comey following the "clear" advice from Justice officials, who, among other reasons, cited Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails as the reason he be dismissed.

"I have accepted their recommendation and you are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately," Trump said in a letter to Comey. "It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors."

Some Democrats have accused Trump's administration of engaging in a coverup by ridding itself of the man overseeing an investigation into the relationship between his campaign and Russia. Democratic lawmakers are calling on Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing the federal investigation into Russia because Attorney General Jeff Sessions previously recused himself, to appoint the special prosecutor.
