May 3 (UPI) -- A manhunt was underway in Chicago after two police officers were shot Tuesday night, authorities said.

The plain-clothes officers were in their car conducting a followup investigation on the city's South Side when one or two vehicles pulled up and opened fire, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters.

"We will get them," he said.

The attack occurred after the officers saw someone inside a silver van shooting at another vehicle, police said.

The officers were in serious but stable condition, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

"We should not be here at 11 o'clock at night thanking the Lord above that these officers survived," said Alderman Raymond Lopez. "It is incomprehensible that this continues in our city, in our state, in our country."

Through Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune tallied 947 shooting victims in the city this year.
